Three members of the Congressional Black Caucus met with former Cuban president Fidel Castro today. This is the first known meeting with American officials since he fell ill in July 2006.
A spokesman at the U.S. Interests Section in Havana confirmed that Rep. Barbara Lee, a California Democrat, and two other lawmakers met with the ailing 82-year-old Castro. No further details were given about the meeting.
Yesterday, a group of U.S. lawmakers met with current President Raul Castro, the head of parliament and the country’s foreign minister. Lee led the delegation of six Democratic representatives to Cuba in efforts to encourage dialogue between the two nations.
