Senate Judiciary Committee Endorses Sotomayor

sonia2

Today, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 13 to 6 to endorse the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. Every Democratic member of the committee voted in favor of the nominee. Lindsey Graham (SC) was the sole Republican who voted for Sotomayor.

The successful vote sends the decision to the full Senate, where it has become increasingly clear that she will be confirmed easily. Not only do Democrats have a 60-to-40 advantage, but a number of Republicans have announced that they will join Graham in supporting Sotomayor.

The Senate will likely be debating her nomination next week. If successful, Judge Sotomayor should be sworn in as the Supreme Court’s first Latino justice, and only the third woman, in time for the start of the high court’s next term in October.
