As Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona signs into law the nation’s most stringent anti-immigration law that was recently passed by the state’s Republican controlled legislature, US Congressman Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) has ordered his district offices closed following multiple threats.
The congressman, who hails from the Tucson area and has spoken out in opposition to the bill, said that his staff has received numerous calls on the issue including several threats promising violence.
One call, according to a report in the Arizona Daily Star that quoted a Grijalva spokesperson, was from a man “”who threatened to go down there and blow everyone’s brains out then go to the border to shoot Mexicans.”
Grijalva expressed sentiments that neither his staff nor constituents should be subjected to such abuse.
His urging of any organizations who share his opposition to the state bill to choose venues other than Arizona for their events join a chorus of voices that are lighting up social media in calls for boycotts of Arizona.
