In the wake of the border crisis, Pope Francis recently advocated for an “urgent intervention” on behalf of the thousands of unaccompanied minors crossing into the United States.
Pope Francis went on to say that “this humanitarian emergency requires, as a first urgent measure, these children be welcomed and protected.” However, he maintains that these first steps “will not be sufficient, unless they are accompanied by policies that inform people about the dangers of such a journey”.
Although not the first time Pope Francis has voiced opinions on highly political topics, his words send a message to people across the world about the nature of this crisis. It has been portrayed as political and polarizing in the news, yet at the heart of the crisis lie children who have faced untold dangers.
The Pope also mentions the underlying economic and security factors that have contributed to the current crisis. Working to promote economic prosperity and security should be a top priority for Central American nations looking to provide opportunities for their citizens to stem the flow of migrant children.
Immigration, as the Pope has said, is “a hallmark of our society,” and he implores the international community to embrace “new forms of legal and safe migration.”
