This week, as polls show she is the preferred choice of some 56% of Democratic party members, Hillary Clinton launched ‘LGBT for Hillary,’ and initiative aimed at organizing LGBT voters for her presidential campaign and enlisted singer Ricky Martin and tennis legend Billie Jean King, two out celebrities, to roll out the new initiative on a conference call with supporters and members of the media.
“Even as we celebrate progress, nobody should forget how much work still lies ahead. That work isn’t finished until every single person, no matter who you are or who you love or where you live is treated with the equality and dignity that you all deserve.” Clinton said.
On the call Clinton announced that the campaign would soon be rolling out additional policy proposals to help LGBT Americans if elected president.
In talking about why he chose to support Clinton, Martin said “as a gay man, what she brings to the table is what I want for me, for my kids, for my family. Listening to the Republican Party is the scariest thing that me as a gay man and a Latino man is facing at the moment. Growing up in the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico, I never dreamed that I would one day be a proud, out gay father of two beautiful little boys, in a country where marriage equality was the law of the land. Now, that’s just an average day — that’s what real progress is.”
The former Secretary of State and former New York senator told those listening “that work isn’t finished until every single person, no matter who you are or who you love or where you live is treated with the equality and dignity that you all deserve. Even as we celebrate progress, nobody should forget how much work still lies ahead.”
