In an unprecedented early show of support by a leading business organization, the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (USHCC) this week endorsed current Housing and Urban Development Secretary, Julian Castro, for vice president at an event in the Obama cabinet official’s home town of San Antonio, Texas.
“We are happily endorsing him for the vice presidency. We’ve grown to know him. We’ve seen him in action and feel very comfortable endorsing him” said Javier Palomarez, USHCC president and CEO.
Castro, who has worked diligently since coming to Washington to develop relationships with key Democratic Party powerbrokers including former President Bill Clinton, has received considerable media buzz even before the Chamber’s endorsement as a potential vice presidential pick for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. She is the leading Democrat in the 2016 presidential contest.
Many see the Latino vote as a crucial and must win voting bloc for whoever wins The White House in November. Castro, a former mayor of San Antonio and rising star in the Democratic Party, is seen as one of the most prominent Latino voices in the party who could help ensure strong Latino support if he were placed on the national ticket.
For his part, Castro has sought to tamp down rumors of any vice presidential selection, telling an Iowa crowd recently “I’m focused completely on being supportive of Hillary. There’s a Democratic primary, I don’t believe that that’s going to happen, and I’ve said that. I fully expect to be back in Texas a year from now.”
