Donald Trump launched his presidential campaign by promising to build a “great, great wall” on the U.S. southern border – making Mexico pay for it – and painting undocumented Mexican immigrants as criminals and rapists. Now, Trump is changing his tone on immigration and “softening” a stance he notoriously endorsed.
“There certainly can be a softening because we’re not looking to hurt people,” Trump said during a Fox News town-hall event Tuesday, Aug. 23.
A staple element to Trump’s campaign for the Republican nomination was his vow to deport all estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. and then allow the “good ones” to re-enter legally. But today, Trump denies “flip flopping.” His campaign claims they are considering what to do with undocumented immigrants in the U.S. in order to be “fair” to everyone.
“The first thing we’re gonna do, if and when I win, is we’re gonna get rid of all the bad ones. We’ve got gang members, we have killers we have a lot of bad people that have to get out of this country,” Trump said Monday night on Fox News. “As far as everybody else, we’re going to go through the process.”
Trump’s campaign has not confirmed whether or not he will abandon the promises he made on illegal immigration that attracted Republican primary voters to his campaign. Trump has spoken out about his plan for a “deportation force,” but his campaign staff has indicated in recent days that such plans may not come to fruition exactly as previously described.
